1971 - Carole King Keeps on Keepin' On

1971 was the year for new bands to form and for an all-time favorite to say "goodbye".  Elton John got his first top ten hit  in 1971 and would go on to have an astounding musical career that is still exceptional to this day. The Beatles officially split in 1971, and Paul McCartney formed Wings.  On the west coast, a "garage band" stepped it up to become one of the favorite bands of all time, "The Eagles"!  Supertramp, Queen, Foghat, and Kansas debuted as new groups in 1971.  They are still heard on Oldies 1480 WHVO to this day.  Rod Stewart hit #1 with his single, "Maggie May".  A new name, Olivia Newton John, was well received too, but some who led the way in years past continued to rock on.  Carole King's "Tapestry" album was unreal!    The new sound of the seventies was making headway.

Important Fact:  The longest number one hit in the history of rock 'n' roll was released in 1971, American Pie by Don McLean.  The world-famous song is over eight minutes long.
