1960 - Chubby Checker Teaches Us the Twist

1960 brought many good hits from a variety of artists.  Although Chubby Checker was not new to rock and roll, he hit it big with The Twist in 1960.  Teenagers loved it, and they celebrated at the hops.  Ray Charles mixed r and b, blues, gospel, and jazz to give us his style of rock and roll.  It was the year of "Georgia on My Mind".  Smokey Robinson ("Shop Around"), Sam Cooke ("Wonderful World"), and The Drifters ("Save The Last Dance for Me") sang love songs.  Teens hung on every word Dick Clark said on American Bandstand.

Interesting Fact:  When Chubby recorded "The Twist" (1959), his record company was not impressed and felt it might be a "B" side at best.  Chubby worked extremely hard to promote it himself and in the summer of 1960, "The Twist" was a hit!  (Just in time for summer parties).

The Rolling Stone named 500 of the greatest songs of all time.  12 songs made the cut in 1960!
