1967 has been deemed "The Summer of Love" by many rock historians. Rock 'n' roll continued to influence pop culture in 1967! The "hippie" look was in style, and the success of the Beatle's "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" album was seen as a new direction for pop music because of its psychedelic elements. Motown groups such as the Supremes had hit after hit. Aretha Franklin, THE Queen of Soul, had 3 classic hits in 1967: "Respect," "Chain of Fools," and "A Natural Woman". American views were changing, and the artists had to adjust their music. Many groups adjusted, but some just went away.
Important Fact: Rolling Stone magazine was founded in 1967. It was devoted to "rock journalism", which indicated that rock and roll wasn't just about playing drums in the garage but was a serious business. Many say, this changed rock and roll forever!
