1968 was a hodge podge of musical tastes. Hits were from every musical style imaginable. There were love songs, such as "This Guy's In Love With You" by Herb Alpert. There were more hits by the Beatles, The Who, The Kinks, Janis Joplin, and Jimi Hendrix. Psychedellic music continued to be popular among some with "Green Tambourine" by the Lemon Pipers topping the charts and "Sky Pilot" by the Animals. Glen Campbell made the scene with "Wichita Lineman". Otis Redding lit up the charts with "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay". Obviously, there was a clear debate on what constituted "rock". We were starting to hear "hard rock" but love songs still had a place in the hearts of Americans.
